As a child, I remember the excitement of starting a new school year—new backpack, new school supplies, new textbooks and a new pair of Gap jeans (and because I'm a 80s-90s chic sometimes a new denim jacket). Yep, I'm a dork and I totally embrace it.
Now as a M.O.M. (Mega Omnipresent Marvel), I'm no less gung-ho about back-to-school mode. And because I can't physically join my girls—Ransom (7), Ruth Love ( 5 1/2), and Camellia (3 1/2)—at school, I thought I would celebrate the changing of the seasonal guard with a change-of-pace, "kick-asana" program.
My go-to exercise is yoga—whether it's Yin, Restorative or Bikram. (Call it an occupational hazard.) So these next few months I wanted to think "outside the mat" with a few new workouts. I'll still do my daily practice and catch a class at Jiva, but here's a rundown of my fall fitness routine .
WED. WALK/RUN CLUB: In an effort to build my daughters' school community and promote health in general in Hilton Head, myself and Jennifer Winzeler launched HI-5. HI-5 stands for Healthy Initiative and has 5 components—joy, relationships (peer and parental), food-nutrition, physical activity and community outreach. To get blood pumping and ideas flowing, I'm leading the weekly HI-5 walk/run, which (since you asked) meets every Wednesday starting Sept. 3rd at 8:15am (drop-off) at Hilton Head Prep's cafeteria. It's open to the public and from 8:15-8:30am I'm serving green tea and coffee as participants discuss distance, route and pace and then hit the start button.
THE BRUCIE-BECCA BITCH SLAP: One of my best friends Brucie Holler and I decided we needed a weekly vent/sweat workout. Every Tuesday and Thursday we meet around 8:30am and ad lib an all-out, one-hour, muscle-building, mind-purifying training session. Brucie is in charge of our walk/run route (she's a Virgo) and I'm in charge of our drills.
DAILY BURN: Mondays and Fridays I decided to try the 30-day free trial of Daily Burn. "From Bodyweight Training and Dance Aerobics to Kettlebells and Yoga, DailyBurn... has a library of over 100 full-length workouts... with unique philosophies and personalities." I have to admit, this app has proven to be user friendly and my assigned virtual trainer Anja Garcia is proving to be a motivating force (but not in that in your face kinda way).
Here's to kicking-asana!
